Some questions are as old as time. They come to us when we gaze at the night sky, watching the stars, the planets, our galaxy, and the countless other worlds that fill our Cosmos: Are we alone? Where do we come from? Why are we here? Origins is a theme that pulses through science. And like life itself, it got its start in the vastness of our universe. The advent of new types of telescopes, instruments, laboratory techniques, and computational methods is giving rise to a groundswell of new opportunities to answer these questions, to find habitable planets, to lay the foundation for the search for life elsewhere, and to understand the origins of life on our own planet.
To fully tackle these research challenges, we need to train a highly interdisciplinary team of scientists so that they have the necessary skill sets to conduct such cutting-edge research. We have established the new Wisconsin Center for Origins Research (WiCOR) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as a hub to train graduate students in this capacity.
